"Unexpected Turbulence" is the fifth level and third mission in Monolith's game of the year "The Operative: No One Lives Forever" It consists of two scenes and is set on an airplane

Briefing

During the flight to London, attempt to learn as much as possible from Dr. Schenker about his research. Schenker is a notoriously cautious man, so direct questions are not advised. He is also reported to have little tolerance for skeptics. Try to keep an open mind.

Scene 1

"This is your captain speaking speaking. We have reached a cruising altitude of 24,000 feet and will soon be leaving German airspace. I've turned off the seatbelt and No Smoking signs. Feel free to move about the cabin. We'll be arriving in London at approx. 6:15pm local time. The temperature is currently 25 degrees centigrade with clear skies. I think we can expect a lovely relaxing flight."

The player is given the choice of what to say to Dr. Schenker. It is advised that the player chooses to ask about his wife. That way he gets started into talking about his research. During their conversation the camera shows the plane and another one flying up close to it. Voices are heard and Magnus Armstrong is revealed to be in charge. They board the plane, causing it to shake. Cate wants to find out what's going on and heads for the cockpit, leaving Dr Schenker in the cabin. When she reaches the cockpit she is knocked out from behind by Armstrong. He then tells his associate to get that "Dr. fella".

Scene 2

Archer's plane is still shaking and is going out of control. Back in his plane, Armstrong decides to leave even though some of his men are still aboard. Cate wakes up and makes her way back to the cabin. The back of the plane breaks off and she is sucked out. Armstrong tells his paratroopers to make sure she doesn't land on her feet. Cate, who is still falling, has to catch up with a paratrouper who has a parachute. Fighting off the other paratrooper, she catches up up the parachutist and takes it from him. The paratrooper falls into a barn, while Cate parachutes safely to the ground.

Characters (In Order of Appearance)

  • Captain (Voice Only)
  • Cate Archer
  • Dr. Schenker
  • Magnus Armstrong
  • Armstrong's Pilot
  • Head Paratrooper
  • Paratroopers
  • Parachutist

Dr. Schenker's Research

Dr. Schenker was the head of a Biological Explosive Research Team. This team were working on a chemical reagent that, when injected into living creatures, causes a chemical reaction inside the body resulting in a massive explosion. The strength of the explosion depends on the amount of the catalyst and human density below ground zero: e.g. in a city the explosion would be far more effective than in a small village. The higher the amount of catalyst a living creature is infected with, the sooner it explodes, creating human time bombs.

Notes & Inside References

  • If you are polite to Dr. Schenker in your conversation, he will thank you for rescuing him and apologizes for having prejudiced you.
  • The pilot of Armstrong's plane speaks with a French accent.
  • Magnus Armstrong is now officially revealed to be an enemy.
  • On the plane a paratrooper wretches because of cottage cheese. Which was a common food served on planes.
  • During the captains speech, he mentions turning the No Smoking signs off. This re-visualizes the fact that smoking was allowed on planes until the late 80's.
  • After knocking Cate out, Armstrong says that he won't kill her because she's a fellow countryman, but still leaves her for dead.
  • This is the first time that Armstrong has the chance to kill Cate but doesn't.
  • It is unknown whether the Head Paratrooper is the same man that always accompanies Armstrong on his missions. Similar characters always appear, (e.g. "A Tenuous Lead" and "The Indomitable Cate Archer") but a name and definite position is unknown.
  • The parachute scene is a reference to the 1979 James Bond film: "Moonraker", which also features a scene where the parachute is taken off a villain after falling out of a plane.
  • While Cate is falling, a man seat belted to his chair falls out of the plane and screams. It is unknown whether this man was a paratrooper or a civilian. He is more likely to be a paratrooper, because Cate and Dr. Schenker were the only passengers aboard.
  • This is the first mission not to be preceded by a briefing in the war room or training at the advanced field tactics.
  • This is Archer's second failed mission.

Music

Guy Whitmore's Orchestra is being played throughout the entire mission.
