SMERSH was a counter-intelligence agency for the Soviet Union that primarily operated during World War II. It was disbanded in 1946.

Shortly after World War II, Dmitrij Volkov emerged in the employ of SMERSH. Volkov was credited with over 1,000 executions (primarily spies and Soviet dissidents).
