Requiem for a Spy

"Requiem for a Spy" is the third level of Monolith's game of the year The Operative: No One Lives Forever. It consists of only one scene and is not considered a mission.

Briefing

Needless to say, the Morocco assignment was an unmitigated disaster. Report to the war room for debriefing.

And try to control your temper.

Plot Summary

Mr. Smith is angry that the previous mission was failed, but nonetheless, Cate is assigned for another mission: An East German biophysicist, []Dr. Schenker]], wants to defect to the West with UNITY's help. In exchange for his freedom he offers information on his research and work he carried out for the Soviets. Cate is to meet with several contacts and sneak into the East German Research Facility and escape with Dr. Schenker.

After the briefing, Cate visits the graveyard in which Bruno is buried. She leaves a flower beside his grave.

She then attends the training facilities to learn some new skills.

Notes & Inside References

  • This is the first time that Cate is seen in the war room without any other operatives.
  • Because the game is set in 1967, the political situation of East Germany is valid. This scene re-establishes the division of Germany to East and West.
  • Dr Schenker's wish to flee from the East is entirely comprehendable because of the strict laws and depressional system the Soviets had over East Germany.
  • The fact that both the Soviets and NATO wanted to get their hands on information from each other during the Cold War is revisualised when Mr. Jones says that if the mission is a success they'll "Strike a mighty blow to the Soviets".
  • The graveyard in which Cate visits Bruno, is seen for the first and last time until Such Is the Nature of Revenge.
  • The Spy-Glasses, cigarette lighter and red lipstick explosive are introduced and only the first function of each is explained.

Music

A combination of both versions of Badedum by Guy Whitmore is played in certain parts of the scene.
