The NKVD (proper name is The People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs) was the secret police for the Soviet Union in the 1930's and 40's.

In 1937 Dmitrij Volkov had joined the NKVD. He served in a gulag near Kiev.

Soviet Army General Nikolai Zhukov was a former member of the NKVD.
